1960s: Carolyn Fulton
|
Carolyn Fulton was a member of the very first Tacoma Youth Symphony in 1963 and won the concerto competition playing oboe in 1967. Now with a PhD in music education and ethnomusicology from Florida State University, Carolyn has taught and researched music all over the world, from Tacoma to Trinidad, from China to Kenya, and with students from kindergarten through college. Recently she returned to Tacoma and is teaching at DeLong Elementary in order to share her music and multicultural information with the most “impressionable” age group (K-5) in the hopes of “making a difference.” She shares that “TYS taught me the value of hard work, persistence, perseverance and preparation.”

1980s: Jonathan Cunningham

Today, I am a manager of software development at Getty Images, but along the way I was an application architect at Russell Investments, a web developer and manager at Free Range Media, a composer and sound designer at Sierra On-Line, a student of music composition at Southern Methodist University, and a cellist with the TYSA (1982 - 1989). I have no idea what I'd be doing today if I'd never started with the cello in 4th grade or if I wasn't part of the TYSA up through high-school. I credit all of my current success to my early music career; it got me into college-with a scholarship (because the grades weren't cutting it-thank you Ed Seferian), it got me my first real job (making computer games), and through those two opportunities I found new interests and challenges that ultimately put me on the software design and development career path. I still stay close to music; I designed and carved myself a snazzy music stand (with ball-and-claw feet), designed and built three bass guitars (one of which is styled after my cello, complete with carved scroll), and was playing bass guitar in a band up until a couple of years ago. The discipline, teamwork and commitment I learned as a member of the TYSA is a big part of who I am today, and I'm thankful to have been a part of the organization's history.

2000s: John Mahler

I spent five wonderful years in TYSA. Among my many fond memories are chamber music recitals, getting to know people who would become life-long friends, and, of course, playing The Firebird and The Tender Land suites at Carnegie Hall.
After high school, I studied Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley and graduated in May 2009. I am currently a Level II Process Engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. I help design and run the final chemical stages of the manufacturing process that prepare many Boeing parts for life at high altitudes. I still find plenty of time to play my cello, and it continues to enrich my life every day.
TYSA even helped my find love, as I am now engaged to another TYSA alum—the beautiful and talented violinist, Brittney Henry. I cannot say enough about the time I spent as part of the youth symphony.
