Education Concerts

Music Educators

As you make plans for this school year we would like to invite you and your fourth grade class(es) to the Tacoma Youth Symphony Education Concert conducted by Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs.  We will present two concerts (9:30-10:30 & 11:30-12:30) on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in the Rialto Theater in Tacoma.  Please click the link below to apply.

The following is for those schools already confirmed for January 2010

Dear Educators,

Welcome to the 2010 TYSA Education Concert!  We are going green this year and leaping into the 21st century by distributing the education packet via email/web as a web resource guide.  In this guide you will find composer backgrounds, stories behind the pieces, video recordings, and access to a variety of lesson plans. I have also attached a variety of resources and activities for your students to this document.

This year's concert will be held on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m..  Please spend some time on audience etiquette and explaining the concert format to your students.  First, the orchestra comes onstage and warms up.  Then, the student concertmaster (a violinist) comes to the podium and tunes the orchestra.  At this time all of the instruments play the note "A" to make sure they all match.  Finally, the conductor comes to the podium and begins the program.  This will allow the students to understand what is happening on stage before the actual program begins.

The concert program is as follows:

Sabre Dance........................................................Aram Kachaturian

Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.....................Benjamin Britten

Fiddle Faddle........................................................Leroy Anderson

Star Wars............................................................John Williams
